“It takes a whole village to raise a child”, African Proverb
More is Caught Than Taught (MCTT) is a development programme built around the wisdom of this African proverb.
The principle of MCTT is that children learn through experience and observation of the adults and the world around them.
During MCTT, participants identify how their children can grow up to be leaders in the world, not just survivors or worse still, victims.
This twelve week programme has a profound impact on all those who take part. It supports them to realise their vision and actively pursue it. The programme is highly participatory, interactive and a great deal of fun.
MCTT leadership group
Designed for managers and those responsible for managing settings and staff teams, this programme allows participants to experience MCTT and then cascade the learning back in their settings.
Usually through monthly meetings, two days a month, the participants will be given structured tasks to support them in creating a collective vision for children in their settings and steps to bringing that vision into reality.
They will support each other through the process, between sessions.
The results have been evident. Participants reported that the whole setting has changed. There has been: better team working, a greater sense of responsibility by team members for the setting, positive changes in relationships with parents and more thoughtfulness about the whole environment.
MCTT partnership between parents and professionals
MCTT has been delivered to parents and staff from settings to great effect over twelve weekly sessions. From taking part in MCTT, parents have enrolled in qualifying courses and gained employment, and staff have developed much richer relationships with both parents and their team members.
Core modules
Vision
Participants develop a collective vision for children, either in their care or their own children and identify the leadership characteristics needed to bring about this vision. The visioning module is the reference point for the rest of the programme.
Environment
During this module participants identify what environment is necessary to support children’s development to be leaders and to bring about their vision.
Internalised oppression and how to be together
Barriers to realising vision are both internal and external. During this module, participants explore the impact of the negative, caught messages about their gender, income bracket, ability, race, culture and life styles on themselves, children and their relationships and how these might work against their pursuit of their vision.
How to BE together
In this module, participants identify behaviours, learnt as a result of upbringing, which can hinder the development of meaningful, cooperative relationships. They define how they will be with each other to create a truly cooperative culture.
Child Development
In this module theories of child development are adapted within the context of a wider body of knowledge, based on life experiences, heritage and vision.
Personal vision
Participants identify their own, personal vision for themselves and how to overcome the barriers to achieving their vision.
Planning
Participants realise their planning patterns, whether they be helpful or not, and develop an understanding of the power of planning for themselves personally and their settings.
The MCTT programme can be designed to suit specific groups and organisational needs.
